The Ocean's Carbon Cycle

Author: Simon Baumgartner

The role of the Ocean in the carbon cycle

Carbon has 4 major reservoirs: atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere. The global Carbon Cycle describes the distribution to this reservoirs and the fluxes between them.

Geostrophic Flow

Author: Blanche Glück

Geostrophic Flow/ Geostrophy

In geostrophic currents the horizontal pressure gradient force is balanced by the Coriolis force. Instead of water is moving along the horizontal pressure gradient (from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure) water moves at right angle to it parallel to the isobars.
In the Northern Hemisphere, water flows with the high pressure to the right to it; in the Southern Hemisphere, water flows with the high pressure …

Global Ocean Circulation Tracer

Author: Hannah Wey, Marja Gächter

Six different tracers are presented here: Temperature, salinity, the CFC, the C14 and the anthropogenic CO2-method that were discussed in the lecture, and additionally the “friendly Floatees”.
