Stratification & Buoyancy Frequency

Author: Simon Matter. Revised by: Emma Velterop.

Stratification

Looking at lakes in higher latitudes the water profile varies substantially between spring and summer; in spring the water temperature is equally distributed at around 4°C and the lake thus well mixed, whereas in summer the lake is stably stratified. This means that the colder water (closer to a temperature of 4°C) is denser and lies at the bottom of the lake, and the warmer and less dense the …

Equation of State

Author: Roland Häberli, Gabriela Schär

An equation of state is a relation between state variables. It is a thermodynamic equation which describes the state of matter under a given set of physical conditions, typically relating energy, temperature, volume, and pressure. Equations of state most commonly are used to describe the properties of fluids, such as liquids, gases, and plasma.

Definitions of salinity

Author: Alexandra Auderset

The original definition of salinity is the mass of solid material (in grams) in a kilogram of seawater after evaporation of the water. This is called the “Absolute Salinity”. Since it is very hard to perform evaporation measurements, this definition is not useful (Millero et al., 2008).$S_{A} = S_{R} + \delta S_{A} = (35.16504 [\frac{g}{kg}]-1/35) S_{P} + \delta S_{A} $$S_{A}$$S_{R}$$S_{P}$$\delta S_{A}$

Temperature

Author: Rebecca Ritter

Revised by Evelyne Vonwyl

Definition

Temperature T is one of the most important physical characteristics of seawater. In most ocean, it determines the density of water. Temperature can be described as the thermodynamic property of a fluid resulting from activity of molecules and atoms in the fluid (Talley et al., 2011). The more activity (kinetic energy), the higher the temperature.
